How Mediation Works
Mediation is a structured, voluntary process where a neutral third party helps you and the other person reach your own agreements — without going to court.
The Process
- Initial enquiry — Contact us to discuss your situation. We’ll explain the process and answer any questions you have.
- Intake session — Each party meets separately with the mediator. This gives everyone a chance to share their perspective and prepare.
- Joint sessions — All parties meet together with the mediator to work through the issues. Sessions are conducted at a pace that works for everyone.
- Agreement — If agreement is reached, it can be documented in a parenting plan or referred to a solicitor to be formalised.
What to Expect
Mediation sessions are:
- Confidential — what is said in sessions cannot be used in court proceedings
- Voluntary — either party can choose to stop at any time
- Impartial — the mediator does not take sides or make decisions for you
- Flexible — sessions can be held in person or via video call
Is Mediation Right for You?
Mediation works best when both parties are willing to engage in good faith. It is not suitable in situations involving family violence or significant power imbalances — if you have concerns, please mention them when you make your initial enquiry.
How Long Does It Take?
Most matters are resolved within two to four sessions, though this varies depending on the complexity of the issues involved.
